The Shift

A training for people who feel the old world falling apart - and are looking for real support to live what comes next

The world as we know it is unraveling: systems built on control, competition, and disconnection are failing. Many feel it, but few know what comes next. That’s where The Shift begins.

What many people are carrying right now isn’t just disagreement with the world as it is - it’s the question of how to live differently when the old ways no longer work.

What once felt obvious or “normal” no longer makes sense, and new ways of relating haven’t yet become embodied.

This often shows up not as big decisions, but in everyday moments  - in how we respond under pressure, how we relate to kids and each other, and how we navigate uncertainty without a clear map.

The Shift is not just a program. It’s an invitation to step into the future with clarity, courage, and community and learn new ways of relating to and supporting young people outside of conventional educational and parenting norms.

By naming what is, we reclaim our agency. By unlearning what no longer serves us, we create space for something new. And by coming together, we cultivate the belonging, trust, and vision needed to build a future beyond fear.

The Shift is for those ready to stop fighting a broken system and start living the alternative. The new world isn’t a distant dream: it’s already taking shape. Will you be part of it?

Embrace Transformation with The Shift

Are you seeking deeper connections within your family, community, or organization? Do you desire to support the autonomy and agency of kids beyond the conventional school system?

Many people feel a quiet pull toward something different.

Not because everything is broken - but because the ways we were taught to relate no longer feel right.

You might recognize yourself in wanting to:

  • live with more ease and trust in your family, community, or work

  • move beyond power struggles and relate with kids in ways that feel respectful and real

  • feel more connected - to your children, to others, and to yourself

  • act from clarity rather than fear when questioned or judged

  • communicate with honesty and care, even in moments of conflict

  • feel steadier in your choices, without needing certainty or perfection

  • unlearn patterns shaped by society's norms and live something more aligned

The Shift is a place to practice that.

What Is The Shift?

The Shift is a 7-day deschooling/deconditioning experience designed to help you align your life with your values while fostering equity, authenticity, and choice in your relationships.

It's a transformative program designed to guide parents, facilitators, and educators on a journey of personal growth, empowerment, and connection.

Whether you’re just starting to question conventional education or are well into your transition, this program offers the tools and insights you need to thrive.

Through six foundational pillars, we’ll guide you toward lasting transformation:

Transitioning to Self-Directed Education (SDE):
Practical tools and insights to navigate the shift with clarity and confidence.

Communication:
Learn conflict resolution and communication strategies that deepen connection.

Culture Creation:
Build a harmonious environment that supports autonomy and aligns with your values.

Community:
Foster meaningful relationships and support networks that empower everyone involved.

Healing:
Address the wounds of conventional education and systems of power, and reconnect with your intuition and purpose.

SDE Youth Rights Advocacy:
Center youth rights in your journey toward self-directed education.

The Shift is a practice space for parents, educators and folks who want to live their values - not just believe in them.

It’s for those who already know that fear, pressure, and control don’t create the kind of relationships or world they want - but who still find those patterns showing up when life gets hard.

Who Should Join?

The Shift is for parents, educators and folks ready to embrace change. If you’ve left - or are considering leaving - conventional education or parenting, this program will give you the confidence, skills, and perspective to take the next step.

What to Expect from The Shift

The Shift is more than a course: it’s an immersive, transformative experience that meets you where you are and guides you forward with intention and care.

Over 7 days, you’ll participate in interactive live sessions designed to challenge and inspire you. These aren’t lectures; they’re opportunities for deep reflection, connection, and growth.

You’ll engage in:

  • Thought-Provoking Exercises: Uncover the conditioning and beliefs that shape your approach to parenting, education, and relationships.
  • Insightful Discussions: Explore core concepts like power, autonomy, and consent, and how they apply to your life and relationships.
  • Practical Tools and Strategies: Learn actionable ways to strengthen communication, build trust, and foster connection in your family, community, or organization.
  • A Supportive Learning Environment: Connect with like-minded participants in a space that encourages vulnerability, openness, and shared learning.

The Power of Culture Creation and Community

One of the most transformative aspects of The Shift is the opportunity to create and be part of a like-minded community. The journey of deschooling and transitioning to self-directed education can often feel isolating. Many participants describe feeling misunderstood or judged by those around them as they challenge conventional systems.

Through The Shift, you’ll experience what it means to come together in community. This is a space where you can:

  • Share your experiences with others who truly understand your challenges and aspirations.
  • Build connections with people who are also committed to fostering autonomy, respect, and agency for young people.
  • Discover how to create a culture -whether in your family, community, or organization - that supports collaboration, mutual respect, and equity.

By joining this program, you’re not only learning tools and strategies for change; you’re also finding a network of allies to walk this path alongside you.

Together, you’ll explore what it means to build relationships that empower both adults and young people, creating a ripple effect of transformation in your life and beyond.

Who’s Holding This Space

The Shift is held by Becka Koritz and Sari González, long-time collaborators and co-founders of Radical Learning.

Together, we bring over 30 years of combined experience working with children, families, educators, and communities - supporting shifts away from fear-based, control-driven ways of relating and toward practices rooted in trust, consent, and connection.

We’ve been offering The Shift since 2021, holding it many times with participants across Mexico, the United States, and Puerto Rico. Over the years, the training has evolved through lived experience - shaped by the people in the space, the questions they bring, and what actually supports meaningful, lasting change.

Our work grows out of practice - as facilitators, as humans, and as mamas of neurodivergent unschoolers (Becka to a 20-year-old, Sari to an 11-year-old). These experiences deeply inform how we think about learning, power, relationship, and what it means to live our values under real conditions.

We are also the hosts of the Radical Learning Talks podcast, an ongoing conversation about learning, relationship, power, and culture creation - grounded in lived experience and held through dialogue rather than certainty.

We don’t work from fixed answers or formulas.
We work from inside the process - paying close attention to consent, group dynamics, and relational safety, and adjusting the space in response to what’s actually happening.

Together, we bring a balance of structure and play, depth and lightness.
The Shift is held with care, clarity, and trust in people’s capacity to learn through relationship - without being pushed, fixed, or rushed.

What do participants say?

“I’m so grateful for the beautiful human connections and opportunities to evolve as a result of my experience at The Shift. It's challenging to find the words to describe the deschooling experience The Shift immersed us in, but if I can summarize it in one word, I would say evolutionary. This experience not only pushes you to re-examine hard wired beliefs and social conditioning around schooling and being in relationship with young people, but the facilitators create a space that naturally allows you to show up as your full self without fearing judgement for exploring parts of you that intuitively feel right but could not be supported or even allowed to be revealed in schoolish settings. THIS experience is exactly what they want you and your learners to feel in your self-directed learning communities. It's also an experience I have NEVER felt in any educational conference, training, or workshop I've participated in over the last 20 years (except for Beyond Diversity 101). Our learning journey didn't start with the introduction of titles, degrees, and long winded stories about our "expertise". It started with a clear understanding that our imperfections and mistakes along the learning process will be equally valued and celebrated with the gifts and wisdom each of us bring to our learning community. We didn't sit and receive a lecture or were PowerPointed to death on deschooling & unschooling. We lived & practiced it in action in all of its messiness for an entire week together. This is the magic of The Shift!”

Chemay Morales-James

“The Shift is a week full of gentle invitations to look deeply (or not) into our beliefs, where they come from and how are they serving us in our lives and interactions through open conversations, sharing, games and reflections. In case we find they don't serve us, we have the opportunity to learn, explore and practice tools that enable us to change our typical responses bases on those beliefs and any time we don't quite get it, we have the opportunity to speak up and celebrate joyfully together. I used to struggle with how to transmit to my partner the value, connection and growth we could achieve within ourselves and our tribe. The Shift has more than helped me, it has supported me in experiencing how building community based on trust, consent, listening, non-judgement and love is possible among diverse, unique beings. I feel I have blossomed into a less reactive, frustrated, stressed and annoyed human to a more connected, authentic, joyful, energetic, patient and open being after this experience. This process of transformation has allowed me to engage with others in a compassionate way and listen - really listen through the use of the tools acquired. The most important thing I take from this experience (which is difficult for me to pinpoint because there are so, so many useful skills I developed during this week!) is the ability to observe and understand power-over systems within me and pause in the moment to apply one of the liberation and connection tools and know that if/when I f*ck up, I get to celebrate myself and try again!”

“The Shift has quite literally shifted the way I think about my life, my child’s life, and the infinite possibilities that are open to us. I’m beginning to trust myself and the path we are on. Accepting that many things will shift slowly, and that’s okay. One step at a time, trusting the process, and taking the next right step will pave a liberated path forward that may look unconventional to most, AND it will lead to a connection between us and our chosen community that will be exactly what we need. My biggest transformation has been how I’m learning to listen to my intuition and the signs around me. This looks like meaningfully listening not only to my inner being, but also to my child and her gifts, observations, emotions, needs, and desires. I’m also extremely grateful for the opportunity to spend time with this community analyzing and examining the ways in which colonization and white body supremacy have carefully crafted and dictated the ways we have experienced school and life. If you can name it, you can heal it. This exploration of decolonizing education and the Shift has supported me in developing the confidence I was lacking in choosing this path for us. Sending my daughter to school never felt like the right choice and I could never clearly articulate why. Thanks to The Shift, now I can clearly speak to why we are choosing this path. The most important things I’m taking away from The Shift are tools for consent and communication and a deeper sense of acceptance, trust, and community. Our lives are forever changed and I will always be eternally grateful for Becka and Sari and the work that they are doing.”

Brianna Stronk

“"The Shift is an intensive experience of awakening to whatever inside of you is ready to shift in your personal growth journey. It is an opportunity to learn new tools that alter how you navigate life while expanding your capacity for empathy in uncomfortable situations with others. It was also an extremely connective experience where I learned what it felt like to be in an inclusive, liberated, consent-based community with open, honest, authentic folks who valued and supported each others needs and feelings while celebrating fuck ups along the way. I was hired as a facilitator at a brand new unschool that just wrapped up our first year. I have been asked to take over the program going forward and I’ve been excited, knowing this is my calling, but scared because I knew something was wrong and didn’t know what or how to fix it. The Shift gave me a roadmap of tools and a new understanding, propelling me into the role of a confident leader. The Shift was one of the most powerful and life changing experiences in my life. I have read so many books and spoken to so many people about self growth and improvement but this brought my awareness to a whole new level. Since being home, I’m finding myself less annoyed with those around me, more compassionate instead of triggered, and able to express myself in the form of sharing needs and feelings rather than storming away or shutting people out. Big thanks to Sari and Becka for creating something so immensely powerful and modeling for me what being “a facilitator” really means. What a gift."”

“The Shift, to me, is an opportunity to delve into and shift our internal landscapes, and the culture of our homes, communities, and the world overall. There were so many things that The Shift opened up for me, but the biggest was through one of the partner activities we did to enhance our listening. It showed me the necessity of softness in my life. This is still, 5 months later, opening up for me and being integrated. I also saw my habit of not honoring the wisdom of a child, which stemmed from the dishonor of my own wisdom when I was a child. These pivotal realizations, along with the community, resources, tools, systems, etc. that I learned during The Shift' are allowing me to truly face and address difficult truths within myself, in my home, and in community with love. As I work as a youth mentor, I've also been more confident to hold space for youth to self-direct. I'd read just a little bit about The Shift before I knew I needed to be there. The scholarship made it accessible to me! I work as a teacher, and youth mentor for mostly BIPOC youth who have experienced significant trauma, and may experience it daily. I am also a doula, sound healer, and ceremonialist in training. The Shift honored the fact the work we do in community must first be done within. It integrated this knowing into the culture, and systems we learned and utilized during our days in Borike. The Shift allowed me to open up to spaces of my own healing that I hadn't before - giving me greater compassion and softness for myself, and allowing me to show up more fully and effectively for the youth I work with. The connections, practices, tools, etc. I learned at The Shift are still being integrated into my interactions with myself and the youth. I definitely am more able to hold space for healing, joy, and confidence in these youth as they traverse the challenges they meet daily. ”

FAQ

    This is for folks who…

    - feel that the old ways of pushing, managing, or staying in control no longer work

    - sense that something new is needed, even if they can’t fully name it yet

    - want support practicing how to live differently in everyday moments, not just thinking differently

    - care deeply about how they relate - with children, with others, and with themselves

    - are willing to slow down, notice their own patterns, and stay curious under pressure

    - want to be part of a shared practice, rather than doing this work alone

This is not for folks who…

    - are looking for quick fixes, strategies, or step-by-step instructions

    - want to be told what to do, or given the “right” answers

    - are mainly seeking validation that nothing needs to change

    - aren’t interested in looking at their own responses, habits, or ways of relating

    - prefer certainty over inquiry, or solutions over practice

  • Why Seven Days?

Because it takes time to slow down conditioned patterns and settle into a different way of relating. Seven days allows trust, rhythm, and practice to build - not just insight. Most participants find that once they’re in it, they wish they had more time.

  • Why Can’t Kids Take The Shift?

The Shift is a transformative training designed specifically for adults to dive deep into deschooling, self-reflection, and unlearning.

While we love including kids in other aspects of our work, this space is intentionally created for adults to focus fully on their personal growth.

That said, Kids Camp ensures your young ones are supported and engaged while you take this important step in your journey.

  • What is Kids Camp?

Kids Camp is a vibrant, unschooling-inspired space where your young people can explore, play, and connect with others while you participate in The Shift.

Led by experienced facilitators, Kids Camp provides enriching, self-directed activities designed to nurture autonomy, creativity, and connection. It’s the perfect way for the whole family to experience growth - separately, but together!

  • What is Deschooling?

Deschooling is another word for Deconditioning: the process of shedding the programming and habits that come from systems that exert control over our time, bodies, thoughts, and actions. As Akilah S. Richards beautifully puts it in Raising Free People, it’s about “reclaiming our agency.”

When we talk about deschooling, we’re referring to the shift that happens when we step away from systems that limit and harm us - whether that’s traditional schooling, societal norms, or outdated belief systems.

    Why is Deschooling Important?

As the world around us evolves, we are called to grow and change with it. Breaking free from societal systems that don’t serve us can feel daunting, especially when it feels like you’re doing it alone.

But here’s the thing: change becomes easier when we have the support and space to reflect, learn, and unlearn. That’s why we created The Shift - to give people the opportunity to dive deep into their beliefs, values, and purpose, and realign their behaviors with their true intentions.

Through deschooling, we invite you to question the limitations placed on you by society and fear-based thinking. With the right tools and support, you can start reclaiming your innate potential. By doing so, you’ll build relationships grounded in equity, authenticity, and choice - setting the stage for a new, more liberated way of learning and living.
